The winning images for the 2013-2014 competition, selected from 55 countries, highlight the beauty of the night skies and its battle with light pollution.
Luc Perrot from Réunion Island of France (southern Indian Ocean) won first place in Beauty of the Night Sky category for his image “Over the Top,” captured on Feb. 28, 2014. A volcano in the Reunion Island peeks out of a sea of clouds and rests under stars. Organized by the international program The World at Night, the contest is a collaboration with outreach and education groups of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and Global Astronomy Month, the Astronomers Without Borders annual world-wide program in April.
