<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">National President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Kayode Obembe, on Wednesday, has reportedly assured the Senate President, David Mark, that the 51-day old industrial action embarked upon by medical doctors across the country, would soon be called off.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Obembe was said to have given the assurance when he led members of the NMA executive to hold a closed-door meeting with the Senate President in Abuja. The meeting, which commenced in the late hours of Tuesday, lasted till the early hours of Wednesday.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Mr. Paul Mumeh, on Wednesday, gave hint of what transpired at the meeting, said to have been attended by the Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan; Senator Tunde Ogbeha, as well as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The statement explained that Obembe however said he would not give the exact date and time that the strike would be called off until he reported back to his members.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The NMA boss was also quoted to have described the meeting with Mark as, “very useful and successful.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He described as incorrect “the notion in some quarters that the striking doctors abandoned the nation in this trying times of major heath challenge on account of the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He clarified that there was never a time the doctors refused to respond to the national emergency.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The NMA boss said, “Doctors were not unmindful of the health challenges faced by the nation at the moment but needed government to correct some abnormalities in the health sector to make it more effective and responsive to the health care needs of the citizens.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He pledged to convene a stakeholders meeting soon as part of the process to put an end to the current industrial action.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Nigerian doctors embarked on the nationwide strike on July 1 following their disagreement with the Federal Government over alleged unpaid allowances.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Mumeh’s statement added that Mark reminded the doctors of the implications of the strike to the health of the citizens and that there had been indications that government had complied with a reasonable number of the doctors’ demands.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Medical doctors, students, consultants converged at the Lagos University Teaching hospital, (LUTH), Idi Araba, today to protest the recent sack of 16,000 resident doctors by the Federal Government. <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Nigerian Medical Association has rejected the sack of resident doctors by the Federal Govt which happened on Wednesday August 13th.<br /><br />At a press briefing today in Abuja, the president of the NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe asked the federal government to withdraw its circular on the sack of the resident doctors and also reverse the directive</span><blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">"NMA demands immediate withdrawal of the suspension circular and unconditional reinstatement of the so-called sacked resident doctors. Government should show commitment on her part in resolving the current impasse with the NMA rather than resorting to punitive measures that will only further aggravate the already deplorable situation. NMA condemns in totality the alleged presidential directive via the Federal Ministry of Health suspending Residency Training Programme in Nigeria,” the NMA President added.</span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The NMA president also stated that even if FG reinstates the resident doctors, they will still not call off their strike, which is over a month now, adding that the govt must meet its “24-point demand”.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">In a letter signed and dated August 8, 2014, Obembe said he was resigning following the controversies that trailed the suspension of the over-one-month-old doctors’ strike.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“There has been a request for clarification about the two postings by the NMA Secretariat on the NMA blog. I want to make it categorically clear that I stand by every letter of the document I signed, that the strike was suspended,” the statement read.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“And since upon my integrity and honour I cannot continue to drive the doctrine that ‘strike continues,’ I hereby tender my letter of resignation as NMA President. What I have written, I have written.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The NMA on Thursday suspended its nationwide strike with immediate effect. The union, in a communiqué, after its emergency delegate meeting in Abuja, had cited the recent outbreak of Ebola virus as part of the reasons for its action.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Obembe, who signed the communiqué, had said the need to attend to victims of insurgency, especially those affected by the incessant bomb blasts, also informed its decision. The doctors had also acknowledged the personal intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan in the matter since the strike started on July 1.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">When contacted, Obembe’s mobile number could not be reached while a text message sent to him had not been responded to as at press time.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Kwara State Chapter of the body, Dr. Ayinla Abubakar had said that doctors in the state under the NMA would continue their strike.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">In a telephone interview with our correspondent in Ilorin on Friday, Abubakar claimed that he was not aware of the national leadership of the body calling off the strike as widely reported, therefore the action continues in Kwara.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He said, “A meeting was held in Abuja. The resolution of the meeting is that the strike continues. The strike continues in Kwara because that is the resolution we came back with from the national meeting.”</span></div>
