<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau  school owners in Lagos State and the Federal Government may clash over the latters order directing all primary and secondary schools in the country to resume on October 13, 2014, instead of the anticipated September 15.<br /><br />At a sensitization programme on Ebola which held on Thursday, Punch reports that the school owners, under the umbrella of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, believe that the directive is unnecessary.<br /><br />The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, had announced the resumption date after a meeting with the 36 state commissioners of education on Tuesday in Abuja. But speaking at the sensitisation programme, the Lagos State President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Mr. Yomi Otubela, said:<br /><br />We have sent our appeal to the Federal Government through the Lagos State Special Adviser on Public Health informing it that if religious organisations and other places are left open, these children could as well contract the virus there.If markets that have more crowd than what we have in schools are not asked to close down, then we wonder why the government will not allow us put preventive measures in place and allow these children return to school. School is supposed to be a place of knowledge and we are to educate and expose them to the knowledge on what they need to know to prevent the spread of the virus, not keeping them out of schools and keeping them ignorant of what is happening.<br /><br />The founder of Supreme Educational Foundation Schools, Mrs. Adenike Adamolekun, also said the directive by the Federal Government was senseless.<br /><br />She said:<br /><br />Just as we are praising the Federal Government for being proactive in containing the Ebola virus, we are also condemning them on this one. It does not make sense at all. Even if they had any doubt, what they needed to have done was to have put together some precautions and extend it to all schools, ensuring that all schools abide by them. Shutting the schools for a whole month, considering the fact they will be shut down next year again because of elections, is a bad idea. Moreover, parents do not know what to do with those kids. I think this is an unnecessary approach to the issue.<br /><br />Anotherschool proprietress, Dr. Maggie Ibru, stated that what the Federal Government could have done was to provide hand sanitisers in all private and public schools in the country.<br /><br />No, the Federal Government got it wrong on this one because this will not stop the students from participating in international examinations. What the government should have done is to supply all schools with hand sanitisers, both private and public, because who attend the private schools too are Nigerians.They should allow the children to go back to school. What to do is simple: the Federal Government could have increased the sensitisation level on Ebola prevention in our schools and if possible, give a directive to all schools not to allow guests enter their premises, or rather mandate every child and visitor be subjected to a test before entering the school premises. These are the measures that the Federal Government should have taken.<br /><br />The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Government on Public Health, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, however disagreed with the school owners, asking them to abide by the Federal Governments directive. She also asked them not to place priority on their financial wellbeing over the physical wellbeing of the school children</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Dennis Akagha was engaged to late nurse,Justina Ejelonu before her death.She had just secured a job at First <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">Consultant</span> <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD11">Hospital</span>, Lagos and was reluctant to go to work on the <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD4">first day</span> she was expected to resume on account of ‘morning sickness’ (<span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD9">pregnancy symptoms</span>) and he encouraged her to go.Sadly,her first duty and first patient to nurse on her first day at work was the late <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD12">Patrick</span> Sawyer, the Liberian-American, who brought the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) to Nigeria.In this indepth interview with <a href="http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/survived-ebola-dennis-akagha/" style="text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Vanguard</a>, he opened up on how he survived and his last moments with her</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The truth is that Justina and I were not legally married, we were planning for our traditional <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD6">marriage</span> in October and she just got this job. She was a qualified graduate nurse and got the job at the First Consultant Hospital in Lagos. She resumed duty at the hospital on the 21st of July, while Patrick Sawyer was admitted at the hospital on the 20th.He was her first patient.<br /><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more" style="text-decoration: none;"></a>She was one of the nurses that nursed him. She was pregnant and so her immune system was weak, which made it easy for her to contract the disease. On that first day which was a Monday, she was having some pregnancy symptoms, but I just encouraged her to go because it was her first day at work. Sawyer was her first patient.<br />The next day, Tuesday, she didn’t work on Sawyer. Wednesday and Thursday, she was off. <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD10">Then on</span> Friday, Patrick Sawyer died. They didn’t know he had Ebola, it was three days later <a href="" name="more"></a>that they realized it was Ebola</span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b>On when he knew she was infected..</b></span><br />

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">It was after Sawyer died that she told me she nursed him but that she was on gloves. She even thanked God that she didn’t have direct <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">contact</span> with him. The fever continued and we thought it was just pregnancy symptoms and even when she went to her hospital, they confirmed the same thing. She took drugs and ran tests, yet it persisted. At night, she was usually cold and feverish and her body temperature was usually very high. At a point, I began to suspect that she had contacted the virus. I did some research on the disease and realised that she was having similar symptoms.<br />On the 14th of August, it became serious, she started stooling and vomiting. I had to clean up everything. All of a sudden, she started bleeding and she started crying that she had lost the pregnancy. I had to call her relatives and other people. The bleeding persisted and I had to clean up everything.</span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b>While you were attending to her did you wear gloves?</b></span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Initially I was not wearing gloves because I felt I had already been exposed to the virus. But later I cautioned myself and started wearing nylon on my hands. But I couldn’t stay away from her. I kept consoling her. Even when I took her to the hospital, she wanted to hold me and I told her to also consider my safety. She managed to hold herself and was able to find her way out in a pool of her blood. We chartered a taxi to the hospital, but first, I took her to First Consultant Hospital because I felt they should know more. When we got there, I was directed to IGH, Yaba. I told the taxi driver to take us there. The driver wasn’t even aware of what was going on as he took us to Yaba.<br />Justina was on the floor for 30 minutes before she was attended to. She was screaming that she was going to die. She was seriously bleeding, she had to come out of the taxi and lay on the floor. I ran around, trying to get doctors to attend to her. After everything, they took her in, took her blood samples and the following day, the result came out that it was Ebola. They washed the taxi with chlorine and also bathed the taxi driver and I with chlorine spray.<br />At that point, the taxi driver knew what was going on, he couldn’t even take me home because he was so scared. I had to look for somewhere to pass the night in the hospital. Early the next morning, I left the Hospital. The taxi driver is alive today, nothing happened to him. We have been checking on him and the last time we spoke he told me, he was fine.</span></blockquote>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br /><b> So what happened after you got exposed to the virus?</b></span><br />

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">14 days after I was exposed to Ebola, my temperature rose from the usual 35.2 degrees centigrade to 37.2. The Lagos State government gave me a thermometer the day I dropped Justina off at the centre. It took them two straight weeks to visit my home and to disinfect it. Before they came, I had already done the much I could do. I used bleach and detergent to clean the whole house, furniture and clothes inclusive.</span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b> Since you had already visited the centre what else was done for you by the state?</b></span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Lagos State government sent health professionals to check on me regularly to know how l was doing or if l had the signs of the virus manifesting. So they used to come around to check on me. At some point they created scenes with their visits. I was embarrassed and I was stigmatized. I complained severely to them that I didn’t like what they were doing. Then, one Saturday they visited again, I complained about the pains I was beginning to experience; excruciating pains around my waist. I started praying and asking people to pray for me.<br />Before this time, I believed in the Holy Communion, so I usually take it daily and do feet washing. I was going to the hospital daily to see late Justina. Initially, I was seeing her through the window and she would say I should take her out of the hospital. She complained of lack of care.<br />Perhaps, Justina would have survived the virus, if not for the state she was in. Her immune system was down because she was pregnant. Along the line, she had a miscarriage and lost the baby due to the Ebola virus disease.<br />The doctors, who were supposed to do an evacuation on her couldn’t do it because they claimed that an evacuation was too risky as she was heavily infected and may pass on the virus to another person.<br />Since nothing was done even after the bleeding had stopped, it led to more complications for her because the already dead foetus somehow got rotten in the womb and started a <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">damaging</span> process which led to further complication. Meanwhile, she was still stooling and vomiting and since nobody could dare to touch her, she was left on top of her excretions even when she couldn’t do much for herself due to her weak state. She was given her incisions and other drugs. I believe if some people survived Justina should have been one of them. At a point, I wished I was a doctor myself; I would have taken the risk of doing the evacuation because it really affected her.</span></blockquote>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"> The last day I saw her, I had to go inside the ward because she was so unkempt as nobody attended to her. At that time, the quarantined patients were in the former facility where there was no water and she had messed up herself again. I had to look for water to clean her up, change her pampers and arrange her bedding. Since I was aware of what I was dealing with, I got myself protected while cleaning up <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD8">the place</span>. I made sure she looked better than when I saw her. Justina was shivering the last day I saw her, one side of her stomach was already swollen, and her legs were also swollen. I prayed for her. At a point, she needed oxygen and the hospital couldn’t provide it. Her <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD5">friends</span> had to provide it. That was the last day I saw her.<br />On Sunday Morning, I called her line like I usually did before visiting her, but she didn’t pick her calls. When I got to the hospital, I was told that she was dead.<br />Was she taking your calls while she was at the facility?<br />Yes, in fact she called me that last day and I knew she was going to give up, because she was saying some funny things. She said I should tell <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD7">my people</span> to go and meet her father so as to finalize our marriage plans, that she’s leaving that place.</span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b>From what you have said, were you not scared that you may die as well from the disease?</b></span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">I personally don’t believe in taking medications. I had the mentality that I wasn’t sick. I told the government what I was experiencing. On the day they came to pick me up for treatment, all of a sudden, my temperature went back to normal. The shivering and pains were all gone. So they decided that they would be checking on me. But it got to a point people stopped selling things to me. It was as if the government got a report that I shouldn’t be around. So, they came and said I should go with them that they wanted to take my blood sample. I went with them and they took my blood sample, I was kept in a ward known as the ‘suspected ward.’<br />The result came out and it was positive. I was then taken to a confined ward. One of the doctors from UNICEF, a white lady told me that they were having issues with the results and that they would have to re-run the tests. They did the tests again and it was still positive. I told them that it wasn’t my result and that I was healthy. I was even doing my usual exercises (press-ups) every morning. I kept telling them that I wasn’t sick. They took my blood sample the third time. That night, they told me that I tested negative in the last result and that I don’t have any reason to remain there. That was how I was discharged.</span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b>While you were going through all these at the facility what happened to your job?</b></span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">I was a marketer in an oil and gas company. I worked on commission basis, but at a point, I realized that people were not calling me and when I called they won’t pick my calls. Even the person that I report directly refused to pick my calls and also refused to associate with me. Justina and I just got our jobs, she got hers at First Consultant Hospital and I got mine as a marketer with the oil and gas company.<br />Do you think that the government or First Consultant Hospital should compensate Justina’s family?<br />Although, no amount of money they give to the family will bring her back I think the government owes Justina’s family a lot because she died trying to save a situation. Justina died in active service as her death wasn’t natural.</span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b>So how did your status change from positive to negative?</b></span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">I was reading a book on healing and taking of the Holy Communion. So I learnt to take Holy Communion morning, afternoon and night. I also engaged myself in feet-washing every day before going to bed. The Almighty God saved me; the Holy Spirit healed me. It wasn’t as though l didn’t fall sick as l had direct contact with Justina but the Almighty God healed me. When I was discharged, I got to my house on Saturday evening and spent two hours the next day, Sunday, thanking God on my own. I didn’t go to church or anywhere because of the already established stigma but today I can confidently attend church activities because I guess they all know I’m free now. I know my faith and belief healed me. God also worked for me apart from the fact that my immune system is also working. I believe I got healed also because friends prayed for me.</span></blockquote>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The ministry has also shut down the late Enemua’s hospital as well as the Good Heart Hospital, a private health facility where he was treated until his demise, and a hotel where a staff of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) who was treated by the late medical doctor lodged while he was in Port Harcourt.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Enemua died on Friday, August 22, 2014, in Port Harcourt, and the result of the samples taken from him, which was released yesterday morning, indicated that he died of the dreaded disease.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The state commissioner for health, Dr Sampson Parker, who disclosed this while briefing journalists in Port Harcourt, said those quarantined include staff of the two hospitals and the hotel as well as Enemua’s wife.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Parker stated that the deceased’s wife, who is also a medical doctor, has already shown signs of fever and has been taken in for treatment, adding that any of those quarantined who shows sign of fever, which is the simplest symptoms of Ebola virus disease, would be taken in for treatment.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He said: “Dr Ike Sam Enemua died last Friday, August 22, 2014, as a result of what was suspected to be Ebola virus. The Rivers State Ministry of Health, on becoming aware of the conditions of his death, immediately commenced investigation and contact-tracing. As at today (Thursday), about 100 contacts from the hotel, patients of Dr Enemua, patients of the hospital where the late Dr Enemua was treated till his demise have been identified and restricted in Rivers State.</span></div>

From our investigations, some facts have emerged: a staff of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the team that received the late Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American diplomat who died of Ebola disease in Lagos, made a trip to Port Harcourt where he checked into a hotel and met Dr Enemua.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“About a week after his departure, Dr Enemua took ill and was rushed to a hospital where he presented with symptoms of high fever, stooling and vomiting. In the course of his treatment, the managing physician became suspicious and took samples for investigation. A few days after, Dr Enemua died. His body was deposited at a mortuary in Port Harcourt.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“Dr Enemua’s widow, who is also a medical doctor and who cared for him during his illness, has taken ill. She is being quarantined. A few hours ago, the result of the samples taken on Dr Enemua came out and it was positive. The diplomat, who was seen by the late Enemua is alive and well.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">This now brings to 15 the total number of identified cases of Ebola in Nigeria. Out of this number, the total number of deaths is 5, while one under treatment is stable and improving.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The minister of health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who stated this at a joint ministerial press conference with the minister of information, Mr Labaran Maku, in Abuja yesterday, said that the additional two cases were not treated at the isolation ward in Lagos.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“One of them is a primary contact of Mr Patrick Sawyer. Even though he presently does not have Ebola virus disease (EVD), further laboratory tests indicate that he had suffered from EVD,” the minister said.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“This primary contact of Mr Sawyer evaded our surveillance team in the last week of July 2014 and travelled out of Lagos to Port Harcourt where, as we now understand, he consulted with a doctor and was apparently treated for some symptoms. After four days, following a manhunt for him, he returned to Lagos by which time he was found to be without symptoms,” the minister said. “This case would have been of no further interest since he had completed the 21 days of surveillance without any other issue, but for the fact that the doctor who treated him died last Friday, 22nd August, 2014.”</span></div>

However, because the widow is now symptomatic, she has since yesterday been quarantined pending the outcome of laboratory tests being carried on her,” Chukwu said.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Meanwhile, in conjunction with health experts from Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday announced that it would be organizing a three-day workshop in order to strengthen Africa’s defences against the Ebola outbreak.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The first in a series of preparedness and response workshops began on Tuesday in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, with Dr Deo Nshimirimana from the WHO Regional Office for Africa saying that “despite efforts being made to control the Ebola virus disease (EVD) the outbreak was continuing and the number of cases and deaths increasing, thus constituting a threat for all African countries and the world.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“The EVD outbreak is now not only a health problem, it is a threat to the economy and development of our countries as well, and we need to expedite efforts to quickly control the situation,” he said.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Since the start of the outbreak, WHO and its partners have deployed more than 450 people to the four affected countries: Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Experts deployed include field coordinators, clinicians, epidemiologists, infection control and prevention specialists, logicians and data managers, communication specialists, medical anthropologists and social mobilizers.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Meanwhile, WHO said it had been notified yesterday by the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) of an outbreak of EVD in the country’s Equateur Province. The case involved a pregnant woman from a village who butchered a bush animal that had been killed and given to her by her husband. She became ill with symptoms of EVD and died on August 11 of a then-unidentified haemorrhagic fever.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Between July 28 and August 18, 2014, a total of 24 suspected cases of haemorrhagic fever, including 13 deaths, have been identified.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Samples have been sent to laboratories in DRC’s capital, Kinshasa, and in Gabon for confirmation of Ebola and to identify the strain found in the DRC. The index case and the 80 contacts have no history of travel to the Ebola-affected countries in West Africa or history of contact with individuals from the affected areas. At this time, WHO says, it is believed that the outbreak in DRC is unrelated to the ongoing outbreak in West Africa.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Federal Government, Thursday, confirmed that the doctor that died in a hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, died of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.<br /><br />The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, told journalists in Abuja on Thursday that the doctor contacted the disease after treating a patient who came in contact with Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American who brought Ebola to Nigeria.<br /><br />According to the minister, the patient after experiencing some symptoms, went for treatment.</span><blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“This primary contact of Mr. Sawyer’s evaded our surveillance team in the last week of July 2014 and travelled out of Lagos to Port Harcourt where, as we now understand, he consulted with a doctor and was apparently treated for some symptoms,” he said. “After four days, following a manhunt for him, he returned to Lagos by which time he was found to be without symptoms.” The same was, however, not the case for the doctor who treated him as he got infected and finally died on August 22. “</span></blockquote>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Following the report of this death by the doctor’s widow the next day, the case had been thoroughly investigated and laboratory analysis showed that this doctor died from EVD,” the minister said. “</span></blockquote>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">As a result, several contacts have now been traced, registered and placed under surveillance. However, because the widow is now symptomatic, she has been quarantined pending the outcome of laboratory tests on her.” </span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Mr. Chukwu, a professor, did not mention the name of the doctor. He said the wife of the doctor has been quarantined and 70 other contacts have since been traced and placed under surveillance in Port Harcourt.<br /><br />The Minister appealed to residents under surveillance in Port Harcourt to abide by the advice given to them by health officials. He urged other residents not to panic, saying the Nigerian government is in full control of the situation.<br /><br />The doctor’s death brings to six the number of people that have died of Ebola in Nigeria. <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">A doctor, who secretly treated a diplomat who had contact with the index case, Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, has died of Ebola in Nigeria.<br /><br />The doctor, who has yet to be named, died on Friday. His wife has also taken ill and has been quarantined in Port Harcourt. Interestingly, the diplomat the doctor treated is still alive.<br /><br />The diplomat, who was part of the team who met with Patrick Sawyer in Lagos, flew to Port Harcourt, Rivers State for treatment, evading Nigerian federal government surveillance for the disease. The late doctor then took him to a hotel for treatment.<br /><br />As a result of this, 70 people have been quarantined. The doctor's hospital, Good Heart Hospital in Rivers State, has been shut down. <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Dr Bridget Okoeguale, Director, Department of Public Health, gave the advice during interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“There are many literatures that say that after men are infected, when the virus is not found in the blood, it tends to stay in the semen for about seven weeks to three months.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“What we did according to the WHO protocol is that we made sure that when the men are discharged they are given enough condoms, if they cannot abstain for that period.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“We advise them to abstain from sex but where they cannot abstain, they are provided condoms and after the (abstinence) period, we double test to make sure they are free’’, she said.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">On the treatment of Ebola patients, Okoeguale said no drugs or vaccinations were given to them, adding that health authorities had complied with WHO treatment protocol.</span></div>
