<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">THE Sultan of Sokoto and president-general, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar (III) has stated that any terrorist who thinks he or she could bomb himself and others and still go to heaven is delusional.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Sultan said this yesterday when he hosted security chiefs during the breaking of the Ramadan fast in his palace in Sokoto, said: “For us, one single life lost means a lot to us because life is sacred. You cannot love God if you do not love your neighbour and if we all agree that you cannot love God if you do not love your neighbour, then why are we having all these problems?” the Sultan asked.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Noting that Boko Haram has become a franchise used by many to commit series of crimes, the Sultan warned that the insecurity problem facing the country should not be politicized, as such attempt would not bring solutions. </span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Sultan also warned against referring to Boko Haram members as Islamic militants, saying “don’t call Boko Haram ‘Islamic militants’. A criminal is a criminal. Do not link him with his religion. The people doing this insecurity are very small compared to the millions of Muslims that are not in any way connected to insurgency.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"> “When we politicise the security issue, there can never be a solution to it. We should not narrow it down to an ethnic or religious thing. Let us stop pointing accusing fingers and viewing terrorism as Hausa or Fulani issue. We must all join hands to fight insecurity because by the time you feel relaxed and say they should continue to kill themselves, by the time they finished killing themselves they will now get back to you. Therefore, let us collectively fight insecurity,” the Sultan maintained.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He further added that “though, we might not know those behind this insecurity, we should take our hands up to Almighty Allah to expose those doing these killings. We must also not pray and go to sleep. Let us continue to be proactive. Let us continue to work harder and sensitise our people on security matters.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">There was confusion on Saturday night over whether the new moon of Shawwal was sighted in Nigeria to mark the end of the Muslim Ramadan fast.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad, who is also the President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, had around midnight on Saturday announced the sighting of the new moon and therefore the end of Ramadan.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">”The new month of Shawwal was sighted in different places within Nigeria and therefore tomorrow (Sunday) is the first day of Shawwal equivalent to 27 July 2014,” the Sultan said in an announcement aired on the Nigerian Television Authority [NTA].</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">But when contacted after the Sultan’s announcement, the Secretary-General of the organisation, Is-haq Oloyede, a professor of Islamic Studies, said he was not aware that the moon had been sighted.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“I spoke to the Sultan about four times tonight and he did not tell me that the moon has been sighted,” Mr. Oloyede told PREMIUM TIMES. “In any case, any such claim is ridiculous and unscientific. It cannot be right.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“The National Moon-Sighting Committee has not informed us of any credible sighting of the moon. Rather, they said the moon wasn’t sighted. The new moon was only born at 11:45 P.M. tonight (Saturday) and it will take several hours for it to be sighted.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“Is our own sky different? Is our own moon manufactured in Nigeria?”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Professor Oloyede urged Muslims to continue their fast on Sunday and prepare for Eid-Fitri on Monday in line with the verdict of the National Moon-Sighting Committee, [NMC].</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the chairman of the NMC, Hafiz Wali, from Kano, had on Saturday night forwarded the report of his committee to the Sultan and Mr. Oloyede, indicating that the moon had not been sighted.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“Assalamu Alaikum. As expected, the NMC has not received any credible moonsighting report,” Dr. Wali said in a short message report to the NSCIA leaders. “Our team in Gwandu has reported that the Moon has not been sighted.”</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Sultan Sa’ad could not be reached as at the time this report was published at 1:56 a.m on Sunday and it is not clear where he got the report that the moon was sighted.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Prof. Oloyede had issued a statement on Friday asking Muslims to look out for the new moon on Sunday and dismissing any possibility of sighting the crescent (of Shawwal) on Saturday.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“It is an indisputable fact that the old (Ramadan) moon will set just before sunset in Nigeria on Saturday, 26 th of July 2014. The new astronomic moon would be born few minutes before midnight of that Saturday.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“Consequently, the search for Shawwal moon is on Sunday 27th of July 2014. It can be sighted in Nigeria on SUNDAY with optical instruments or with some difficulties with naked eyes. Any claim of sighting a moon that is yet to be born is not only false, mistaken or impossible but also ridiculous.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The sultan is said to have approved that statement.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">PREMIUM TIMES also consulted popular moonlighting website, www.moonsighting.com, which compiles reports of moonsighting all over the world.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">In a detailed report Sunday morning, the website said: “Moon is not possible to be seen anywhere in the world” on Saturday, July 26.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“Moon is not expected to be seen in almost the whole world except with difficulty in South America, and with ease in Polynesian Islands, where there are not many Muslims reporting moonsighting. There is small possibility in South Africa but only experienced observers may see it.”</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">It added, “The Astronomical New Moon is on Saturday July 26, 2014 at 22:42 UT. There is no possibility of moonsighting on that day. On July 27, the moon can be seen with difficulty in South America, but can easily be seen in Polynesian Islands. However, there are not many Muslims reporting moonsighting. On July 28, the moon can easily be seen in almost the whole world, except Northern Asia and Europe.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Also, a Nigerian and member of the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide [MCW], Kareem Isa, from the Kado estate mosque area of Abuja, was quoted as reporting not sighting the moon.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“It is Ramadan 29 today in Nigeria. It was partly clooudy, and I tried from 19:00 to 19:20 local time,” Mr. Isa was quoted as saying.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The same kind of confusion now trailing the end of Ramadan in the country also marked the commencement of the holy month in late June, with miscommunication within the NSCIA itself.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Council later apologised for the situation and promised Muslims in the country that it would work hard to avoid a repeat.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“It is in this respect that the NSCIA wishes to remind all Muslims who know, and notify those who do not, that there is an established structure for moon-sighting in Nigeria,” Mr. Oloyede had said in a statement.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“Due to its significance and technicalities, the Council has a National Moonsighting Committee under the leadership of an expert. The Committee is equipped with necessary equipment and technological gadgets that are relevant to the discharge of its assignment.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Sultan Sa’ad has now announced the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal without recourse to the committee.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has warned the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, against holding talks with the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, until he receives an official approval from the Federal Government.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The apex body of Muslims in the country fears that the Sultan might be blackmailed by the government if he goes ahead to negotiate with the terrorist group, especially on the over 200 pupils of Government Girls’ Secondary School abducted by the sect on April 14, without an official consent.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The council warned that the Islamic leader should not be hoodwinked into making such moves by those calling for his intervention in the insurgency by the sect.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Some Islamic elite, under the aegis of Concerned Muslim Professionals, had written to the Sultan earlier in July, asking him to lead the dialogue with the Boko Haram sect.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The group told the monarch, who is the President-General of the NSCIA, to use his position and engage members of the sect in dialogue that would make them stop their campaign of killings.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Similarly, a human rights activist based in the North and President, Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Shehu Sani, had earlier in May asked the Sultan to spearhead the moves to secure the release of the abducted pupils from the group’s captivity.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Sani, in a letter to the religious leader, had said, “You (Sultan) have a moral duty and a spiritual responsibility to be visibly and actively involved in seeking the resolution of this impasse happening within areas you have religious influence.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">However, the Secretary-General of the NSCIA, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, while speaking to <em>SUNDAY PUNCH</em> on Thursday, warned that the President-General of the council should not be hoodwinked into taking up the task of negotiating with the terrorists.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He said, “The Muslim community had always been taking action; it had always been appealing to the people (Boko Haram) but Muslim leaders are also cautious because in your process to go out to look for these people; if in the process you’re caught talking with them, the government can even turn against you and say you’re part of part of Boko Haram.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“No matter the level of the Muslim leader, he has to think twice before he begins to communicate with these people (sect) because the same government that you want to work for can turn against you and accuse you of complicity; and you will be on your own.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“They (government) have enough machinery to present you as a devil such that members of your family will believe that you’re a devil.”</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">When asked if such could be done to the Sultan, the professor insisted that the Islamic leader could be implicated without the backing of the government, especially at a time when “many of us are being unduly monitored.”</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He added, “I am not the Sultan but fortunately the Sultan has dual status; traditionally, he is the Sultan of Sokoto; religiously, he is the leader of the Muslim community. I relate with him as far as his mandate as the leader of the Muslim community is concerned.</span></div>
<div style="padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“In that capacity, I will not advise him to hold any unilateral action with the sect without having the full confidence of the government of the day. If anybody makes such calls, somebody like the Sultan should think twice before venturing into searching for people you do not know.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Oloyede asked why the Federal Government kept the findings by the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, which was chaired by the Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">“I believe that by now, as Muslims leaders, we should have access to the findings; we don’t. We are just working in darkness. By now, even if the report had not been released, we should have had access to it. Then, we will be able to have some clues to what is happening,” the NSCIA scribe stated.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Also, an Islamic pressure group, Muslims Rights Concern, said it was the responsibility of the Federal Government, and not the Sultan, to seek an end to the insurgency by the group.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The Founder, MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, told <em>SUNDAY PUNCH</em> in an interview on Friday that the Sultan had spoken out against the activities of the sect on several occasions, “what else do they want him to do?”</span></div>
