The CDC did further testing of specimens that were sent their way from the two hospitals and found that 19 of 22 from Kansas City and 11 of 14 from Chicago tested positive for EV-D68<span class="superscript" style="box-sizing: border-box;">.</span></span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— In total, more than 100 children in seven states have</b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;"> tested positive for EV-D68</b> <b style="box-sizing: border-box;">as of September 12, 2014.</b> These include New York, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky and Missouri.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— This infection shows no sign of slowing down. </b>According to CDC, up to a dozen states may have potential cases and investigations are underway.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— All the cases involve young kids of both sexes, many of whom had a history of asthma or wheezing.</b> Of the 19 confirmed cases from Kansas City, 10 were male, and their ages ranged from 6 weeks to 16 years, with a median of 4 years. Nearly 70 percent of patients had a previous history of asthma or wheezing. Of the Chicago group, nine of the 11 patients were female, and ages ranged from 20 months to 15 years with a median of 5 years. Nearly three-quarters had a history of asthma or wheezing.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— The</b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;"> kids stricken with </b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">EV-D68</b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;"> had difficulty breathing and a good number of them experienced wheezing. They also had low blood-oxygen levels. Fevers were less common.</b><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">In Kansas City, about five children (or a quarter) had fevers, while in Chicago, only two (or 18 percent) had fevers.</span></span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— According to the <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/about/EV-D68.html" sl-processed="1" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; -webkit-transition: all 100ms ease; background-image: none !important; box-sizing: border-box; image-rendering: optimizequality; text-decoration: none; transition: all 100ms ease;">CDC</a>, mild symptoms of EV-D68 can include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and muscle aches.</b> But again, the kids who got sick in Missouri and Illinois had symptoms that included difficulty breathing and wheezing.<b style="box-sizing: border-box;"> </b>These patients were treated in pediatric intensive care units at the hospitals. Some needed help breathing with ventilation machines.<b style="box-sizing: border-box;"></b></span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— No one has died from the virus this year</b>, though the CDC says they can't be sure if the virus has ever been deadly since it's not a disease they usually track.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— There's not much you can do to treat it. </b>There are no vaccines or antiviral treatments for EV-D68. The main kind of care is just supportive, so paying attention to symptoms and making sure people get proper fluids and help breathing, if necessary. Again, it doesn't appear to be deadly and the CDC's <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/about/leadership/leaders/schuchat.htm" sl-processed="1" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; -webkit-transition: all 100ms ease; background-image: none !important; box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 600; image-rendering: optimizequality; text-decoration: none; transition: all 100ms ease;">Dr. Anne Schuchat</a> said she believes it typically runs its course in a week.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Dr. Pritish Tosh, an infectious diseases physician-researcher at the Mayo Clinic, added: "When dealing with respiratory illnesses in young people, they can be severe and result in hospitalizations and the requirement of intensive care. And it looks as through this strain of the virus is causing infections in children severe enough to get them admitted to the hospital."</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— </b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Enteroviruses generally are very common. They usually turn up as "summer colds."</b>There are more than 100 different strains, and they affect between 10 and 15 million people in the US per year. They can cause everything from encephalitis to viral meningitis.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">— <b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Enteroviruses are typically spread through the fecal-oral pathway. </b>That means pathogens in one person's feces infect another person by getting into their mouth, usually by touching the face and mouth with dirty hands.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— </b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">This particular strain (EV-D68) spreads like the common cold </b>through respiratory secretions, such as coughing, sneezing, or touching an infected surface. It was first identified in California in 1962. Compared to other strains of the enterovirus, it has been rare in the US. The CDC said that during 2009-2013, they got 79 reports of EV-D68 and it has been the cause of small clusters of sickness but never a widespread outbreak like the one that seems to have taken hold in the Midwest.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">It's usually associated with respiratory illness — like a really intense cold — though the full spectrum of sickness that this strain can bring on is unclear. "We don't know as much about it as we do about some of the common respiratory viruses," said the CDC's  <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/about/leadership/leaders/schuchat.htm" sl-processed="1" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; -webkit-transition: all 100ms ease; background-image: none !important; box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 600; image-rendering: optimizequality; text-decoration: none; transition: all 100ms ease;">Dr. Schuchat</a>.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— </b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">EV-D68 is detected using molecular techniques at several labs across the US and it's not monitored nationally.</b> According to the CDC, enterovirus infections including EV-D68, are not required to be reported. "But laboratory detections of enterovirus and parechovirus types are reported voluntarily to the National Enterovirus Surveillance System, which is managed by CDC. Participating laboratories are encouraged to report monthly summaries of virus type, specimen type, and collection date."</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— The CDC says health care providers should be on the lookout for </b><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">EV-D68 </b>as a possible cause of serious and unexplained severe respiratory illness.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— Parents should only worry if their kids are having difficulty breathing. </b><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">If your child is having trouble breathing, see a doctor.</span></span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— You can prevent spread through good hygiene. </b>Wash your hands and make sure you have good cough etiquette.</span></div> <h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 400; margin: 1.5em 0px 0.5em;"> <span style="font-size: small;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">What we don't know.</span></span></h3> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— We don't know why this strain has turned up in these geographic locations. </b>Again, EV-D68 is thought to be rare so why it's turning up now in clusters across the Midwest, West, and South, and landing kids in hospitals, is unclear.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— Whether it has ever killed people. </b>Since it's not a reportable disease, the CDC said it "does not know how many infections and deaths from EV-D68 occur each year in the United States."</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— Public health officials are not sure about all the symptoms this strain of the virus can cause</b>, since it's uncommon. That means EV-D68 may cause other types of illness beyond just respiratory complications, but we just don't know yet.</span></div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.5em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">— Exactly who is most at risk. </b>The CDC said, "In general, infants, children, and teenagers are most likely to get infected with enteroviruses and become ill. That's because they do not yet have immunity (protection) from previous exposures to these viruses. We believe this is also true for EV-D68." Mr. Entwistle said during a visit to the Nigerian Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, that the drug was not yet available in sufficient quantity to go round all the countries requesting it. The ambassador did not say when the drug would be available for Africa’s most populous country. He only advised the Nigerian health ministry to focus on isolation, screening and prevention. Mr. Entwistle commended the efforts of the Federal Government in curbing the spread of the Ebola virus in the country.<br /><br />He said the aim of the visit was to discuss further on the anti-Ebola cooperation between the U.S government and the Nigerian government. The ambassador also praised the work done at the emergency operation centre and the isolation centre, saying he understood that they were working hard. “You have all seen the headlines over the weekend, this is an issue that we have to keep working hard on, it may be with us for a while but there are some encouraging signs.<br /><br />“Your government is doing a good job on contact tracing; I noticed when I flew back here on Thursday night into the country, before I left the plane I filed in the questionnaire. “I was very impressed because I had to put in my seat number which is a very good idea, so that if you have to trace the guy who was seating next to me you will know where I am. “I have been very impressed by this thing so I encourage the government of Nigeria to keep at it, which I know they will,” he said. Mr.Entwistle said the two countries had a broad partnership to keep collaborating, cooperating and working hard to make the world a better place. He said he could not think of a more important example of cooperation than the Ebola cooperation. Speaking during the visit, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said the Nigerian Government was withholding its approval for the Anti-Ebola drug Nano-Silver produced by a Nigerian because it did not meet the requirements of the National Health Research Ethics Code. He said that the Nano Silver drug, which was made available to the Emergency Operations Centre in Lagos on August 14, did not meet basic research requirements. “The experimental drug, Nano Silver did not meet the requirements of the National Health Research Ethics Code. “Accordingly, the approval was withheld by the National Health Research Ethics Committee,” Mr. Chukwu said. He said the ambassador’s visit was an opportunity to share ideas and information on Ebola virus. “He is the spokesperson for the United States’ government here in Nigeria, and so he came to me as the Chief Public Health Officer of the country to exchange views with me,” Mr. Chukwu said. I knew I had had interaction with the patient and the nurses myself, and so I asked for one of my blood samples to be sent for testing too.</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">"I also started having unusual feelings myself – low grade fever, nausea, and loss of appetite. It felt a bit like malaria, but I knew that within myself that something was not normal."</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">When he was summonsed to the offices of Phebe's medical director to be told the results, his worst fears were confirmed. But Dr Korkor knew that while the virus has a mortality rate of 60-90 per cent, those who treat the symptoms early – a matter of keeping the body well-watered and nourished – improve their survival chances.</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">"I asked the hospital to get an ambulance to take me to Monrovia," he said. "Then I told my wife get me a Bible and nothing else. He was checked into the bed of a patient that had just died.</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">What followed was a lonely, frightening experience. While each patient had their own private cubicle, Dr Korkor knew his colleagues were losing the fight. It was then that he began putting his faith in ancient scripture as well as modern medicine, reading Psalm 91 from his Bible, which refers to how God will protect his followers from "noisome pestilence" and "any plague come nigh thy dwelling".</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Four days in, he was tested again. This time it was negative. "It was like being reborn," he said.</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The ordeal was not quite over, however. Upon his discharge, he returned to Bong County, where he found other people quite literally avoiding him "like the plague".</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">As he told a local radio station: "Thanks to God, I am cured. But now I have a new disease: the stigmatisation that I am a victims of."</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">It is precisely that sort of public misunderstanding that Dr Korkor is now trying to correct, aware that the more the fear and ignorance surrounding Ebola, the more it will spread unchecked. It has already claimed more than 1,000 lives across Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Hence Dr Korkor's visit to his local church last Sunday, where he gave a speech about how he survived his ordeal. In a country of devout Christians, the tale of a man who all but risen from the dead has no shortage of resonance. But while he delivered "special thanks to God for saving my life", he stressed to the congregation that it was down to science, not miracles.</span></div> <div style="padding: 0px 0px 0.7em;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">"The only reason I survived is because I went to get help earlier," he said. Nigeria Health WHO Lauds Nigerian Govt Response to Ebola Outbreak

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday commended the Federal Government’s response to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the country so far.</span><br /> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br />The Country Representative of WHO in Nigeria, Dr Rui Vaz, who made the commendation at a press briefing in Abuja, said the government’s response was a model for other affected countries to copy. The briefing was on the outcome of the meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan, the 36 state governors and their commissioners of health.<br /><br />Vaz was flanked by the Ministers of Health and Information, Prof. Onyeabuchi Chukwu and Labaran Maku, the governors of Lagos and Enugu, Babatunde Fashola and Sullivan Chime, at the briefing. The Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Mr Abdusalami Nasidi, also participated in the briefing.<br /><br />Vaz noted that President Goodluck Jonathan took the first critical step by declaring the disease a national emergency.<br /><br />"The president has also been pushing in order to ensure that we have the emergency operation centres in each state with a very clear plan and accountability framework. This is to ensure that everybody works together under this plan and to provide together the necessary support.<br /><br />"What I would want to emphasise is the leadership from the Federal Government of Nigeria to tackle this epidemic. The presence and leadership from Mr President calling on all governors and commissioners of health in order to understand the current level is commendable.<br /><br />"This is in terms of preparation and anything up to response, and to identify what are the gaps that we together can put our efforts to overcome those challenges. I think this is an important measure for all countries to understand that we need to have a very strong coordination mechanism.<br /><br />The WHO official noted that the disease was controllable with adequate awareness, especially at the grassroots level and effective collaboration of all stakeholders under the plan.<br /><br />Vaz cautioned against any myth about the disease, noting that public misconception contributed significantly to the spread of the virus in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.<br /><br />"We need to avoid stigmatisation, discrimination problems in terms of barriers and people who are keeping their own bodies afraid of what is going to be done. All of those myths we need to work very closely to correct.’’<br /><br />According to him, the issue of transparency in the management of the disease also came up for discussion at the meeting. He stressed the need for every case to be reported for quick identification and action.<br /><br />He said that communities and local leaders had a major role to play in this regard by assisting government to identify suspected cases for urgent action.<br /><br />Vaz added that the sooner any suspected case was identified, the easier it would be for all contacts to be traced and placed under surveillance.</span></div>

A few hours later they were joined by Nigeria, who withdrew their team in protest at how they had been treated in China. Gbenga Elegbeleye, director general of the National Sports Commission, said:</span><blockquote class="tr_bq"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">"Nigerian athletes were quarantined, isolated and barred from training alongside athletes from other countries since they arrived the competition venue over news of Ebola virus in Nigeria. Following this discrimination, we have resolved to pull out from the Games."</span></blockquote> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">In a statement signed Wednesday by the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye Nigeria protested to the organisers that the treatment to the Nigerian athletes were inhuman.<br /><br />The decision to withdraw Team Nigeria from the Games was taken after a meeting with Sports Minister, Dr Tammy Danagogo, Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, President, Engr Sani M. Ndanusa and the Director General of the National sports Commission, Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye.<br /><br />The Youth Olympics is scheduled to hold from August 16 to August 18, and team Nigeria were to participate in three sports – Athletics, Wrestling and Beach Vollleyball, with twelve athletes.</span></div> </div>
