A BRITISH STUDENT IS ON TRIAL AFTER ALLEGEDLY SMUGGLING £16K TO JIHADISTS
THE DEBRIEF: NAWAL MSAAD HAD BEEN PERSUADED TO TAKE THE MONEY TO SYRIA BY FRIENDS, A COURT HEARD YESTERDAY…
Student Nawal Msaad, 27, is on trial facing charges of funding terrorism after being found with €20,000 (£16,000) in her knickers at Heathrow airport. In January this year, she was stopped by police at a departure gate and asked why she was visiting Turkey, she said it was for a ‘short break’ and that she had a bit of money ‘about me’ and would be spending it on gold for her mum.
She was then led to a private room where she produced the money. The money was being smuggled by Msaad, the prosecution claims, on behalf of her friend Amal El-Wahabi’s husband Aine Davis, who converted to Islam six or seven years ago and has since joined rebel fighters in Syria, where President Assad’s regime is being fought in a bloody civil war.
It is also believed that the money was intended to end up in the hands of terrorists, the trial at the Old Bailey heard.
‘The money had been raised in this country and had been destined to support the jihadist cause, which Davis was now pursuing with like-minded supporters,’ said Mark Dennis for the prosecution, according to The Metro.
El-Wahabi and Msaad, who is a student at London Metropolitan University, exchanged texts and WhatsApp messages about their plans, with Msaad being offered €1000 (£800) in return for taking the notes. Both women deny charges of funding terrorism but, if it's true, it's a scary insight into the grooming of British girls by those in jihadist movements.
