The winning images for the 2013-2014 competition, selected from 55 countries, highlight the beauty of the night skies and its battle with light pollution.
Luc Perrot from RĂ©union Island of France (southern Indian Ocean) won first place in Beauty of the Night Sky category for his image “Over the Top,” captured on Feb. 28, 2014. A volcano in the Reunion Island peeks out of a sea of clouds and rests under stars. Organized by the international program The World at Night, the contest is a collaboration with outreach and education groups of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and Global Astronomy Month, the Astronomers Without Borders annual world-wide program in April.
