I am a 40 year old woman who always has heartburn after eating. Although the condition always improves after taking antacids, I am tired of taking the medicine. I will appreciate it if you can advise me on what else to do.

Heartburns (reflux oesophagit is) are usually caused by the passage of the acidic contents in the stomach back into the throat through a weakness of the sphincter between the stomach and the food tube. The problem is usually exacerbated by lying down immediately after eating or eating hastily. The condition can be reduced by eating slowly and taking plenty of water after meals. Moderate cases are best treated with antacids while severe ones may need surgery to correct the problem. Try and eat more slowly, take plenty of fluids and sit up for a while before lying down in order to reduce the incidence.
